Birthday Celebration

December 11, 2019

It was time to celebrate Maman’s birthday. She and Papa had spent some relaxing time in the Spa Nordic during the afternoon.  When they got back Papa made an angel food birthday cake, her favourite. After the celebration the boys added some money to their banks. Maman poured some wine in her new wine tumblers. David showed us their Advent calendars – 10 windows open already.  We all played a fun game. Then Sam showed us peregrine falcon project – very impressive!

Birthday Time

December 01, 2019

Mary Janet came to Ottawa for her annual visit. On Sunday night the Chelsea Bowmans came over to 9 Lambert for a lake trout barbeque. Grandpa showed them an old photo of the Stanley family.  Sam got busy slicing a loaf of bread.  Then the family looked at a photo of a peregrine falcon in Grandpa’s bird book.  Sam has a school project on the falcon.  Soon we were all at the table for dinner.  Surprise – for dessert we had a Baskin & Robbins ice cream cake for Mary Janet’ s and Maman’s December birthdays.  The boys loved searching for the money in the cake.  After dinner a game of Mille Bornes was fun.

Grey Cup Day 2019

November 24, 2019

It was Grey Cup day again – this year the Hamilton Tiger Cats vs the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The boys arrived at 9 Lambert after celebrating Karine’s Dad, Aurel’s birthday with a pizza lunch and an afternoon swim at the Wave Pool. Sam and Karine looked at some family photos and a recipe book with decorated cookies -  next year we may try the football cookies.  Barbara had baked the Tiger Cats football cake. David enjoyed working on puzzles and a Christmas sticker book for a while and Sam rested and watched some TV.  Papa tested out his Great Grandfather, Samuel Bowman’s chair (Cousin Bruce had said he wanted the chair to go to our Samuel Bowman). Grandpa picked up some Chinese food and we all settled in to watch the game. Not a good game for our team.  The boys enjoyed a bit of football passing before going home.

The Boys Go Flying and Birding

Saturday, November 9, 2019

There was a beautiful sunrise this Saturday morning  The boys and Boots came over to 9 Lambert for a visit. It was near lunchtime and David suggested tomato soup which he and Grandpa made.  The boys also enjoyed some leftover Hallowe’en chips and “Scaries” (Smarties).

They had brought over a large book full of paper airplanes to make.  This entertained them for awhile.  Then they wanted to test their new flying creations outside.  Some flew up high and had to be rescued.

After the flying practice, Grandpa suggested a trip to the Rideau River at Adawe Bridge  to do some birding.  On the way there we stopped so the boys could get some poppies to wear for the upcoming Remembrance Day. At the bridge, Sam quickly spotted some Ring-billed Gulls, Mallards and a large Black-backed Gull which flew off.  We hiked across the bridge and birdwatching was quickly replaced by tree climbing when the boys discovered a large “climbing” tree by the water.  The ducks seemed to be closer to the other side of the water so we re-crossed the bridge.  Besides more Mallards, Sam used binoculars and got good views of a Common Merganser, a Harlequin Duck and some Goldeneye, including the rare Barrow’s Golden Eye.

Grandpa gave each boy 75¢ @ 25¢ per bird for their 3 new-to-them bird sightings.
